As polling day comes and goes, everywhere you turn you see shiny, smiling candidate faces on corflutes, asking for your vote.
These signs, made of corrugated polypropylene, are an accepted part of the Australian electoral landscape; so much so that we use a trademark name as part of Aussie vernacular - Corflute is to waterproof signs what Hoover is to vacuum cleaners.
Corflutes are used by politicians of all persuasions - for a very short time. Once the election is over they are collected (mostly - there are always a few stragglers) and need to be recycled…and that’s a problem. Corflute isn’t suitable for kerbside recycling. The manufacturer, Corflex, has specialist recycling centres in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, but that’s not much use to most other electorates. So these signs, having done their democratic duty, often end up in landfill, where microplastics seep into the soils as the cardboard that surrounds them decomposes.
At WOW, we avoid using Corflute for our market signs. But if we did have corflutes, and we couldn’t recycle them, we’d re-purpose them instead. Re-purposing, re-using … it’s at the heart of what we do, and a great alternative to recycling.
